Turkey obtains a new refinery
Brought to life considering the growing demand for fuel oil and the need of Petkim, the sole commodity plastic raw material producer in Turkey, for raw materials, the refinery will start production in October. Mesut İlter, General Manager at Star Refinery, said that Turkey would be capable of producing import goods, and stressed that 80 percent of the refineries around the globe operate as integrated with petrochemicals.
İlter remarked that Star Refinery would be the first example of this integration in Turkey and the torch, characterized as the safety valve for such plants, was lit during the previous month and worked smoothly.
İlter pointed out that the next step would be acquiring the initial hydrocarbon and activating production units, and shared the details of refinery as follows:
“USD 5.2 billion were spent for Star Refinery where 99.1 percent physical progress was achieved up to the present. As we start up the refinery during early October, an investment of USD 6.3 billion will have been accomplished. Currently, we are eagerly waiting for the day when we will have the first batch of oil.
Star Refinery, the greatest concentrated investment made by the Turkish private sector, has a capacity of processing 10 million tons of crude oil per year. The refinery will produce 1.6 million tons of naphtha, 1.6 million tons of jet fuel and 4.5 million tons of ultra-low sulphurous diesel.
